Inside the Captain Marvel Film The Comics the Symbols the Feminismand Easter Eggs Too edition by Valerie Estelle Frankel Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

  • Always enjoy this author's in-depth books on popular films and fandoms. Her extensive research and inspired analysis are a great way to both review the film and organize your own thoughts. I was not at all familiar with this cinematic comic universe, so I greatly benefited from her chronology, as well as her inclusion of color images. I appreciate that she quotes negative critics, only to refute them, often humorously. The pen is mightier than the sword! She addresses the inevitable comparison to Wonder Woman, and explains their contrasts. I will read anything by this notable expert on Heroine's Journey and Feminism.
  • Frankel does a great job of both giving necessary background information about Captain Marvel and investigating new avenues of research and scholarship pertaining to the new film. By applying the Heroine's Journey to the newest incarnations of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, the author suggests that a character who started out as male in the comics has something to offer feminist readers and viewers that goes beyond Campell's Model of the monomyth. I found the book to be interesting as a comic book / MCU film fan and as a feminist scholar. Most importantly, it is completely accessible to casual readers and non-academics, while still offering solid research. I enjoyed it immensely!
